Compare

StarTeam is offered in two editions in order to best fit your organization’s needs. Both editions are capable of scaling from the very smallest projects all the way to some of the world’s largest source code repository deployments. The most significant addition found in the Enterprise Advantage Edition over the Enterprise Edition, is the inclusion of advanced remote caching technology to support highly distributed teams in potentially huge enterprise deployments.

StarTeam versus open source based solutions

While cost is definitely a major contributing factor to the increased use of open source tools in recent years, organizations are coming to realize that there are more factors at work as adoption increase. Some key considerations are highlighted below:

Interoperability & open source co-existence

With the Borland Connector for Tasktop, StarTeam opens up a world of ALM tool interoperability possibilities, making it possible to unify ALM processes like never before. With over 40 ALM vendors supporting the Tasktop framework, streamlining your ALM environment is de-risked significantly. StarTeam supports the co-existence of both agile and waterfall based projects, content and process automation within the same shared repository.

SubVersion Federation

Using the Borland Tasktop Connector with StarTeam, users will be able to federate SVN file repository content within StarTeam, allowing these files to co-exist alongside other existing StarTeam assets (including both file and change management assets). This adds the power of StarTeam's comprehensive change management capabilities to any number of SVN repositories and provides enterprise wide visibility and control for a mixed StarTeam/SVN environment.

Repository proliferation and ALM tool landscape complexity

With more disconnected open source repositories being deployed over time, organizations are facing a growing problem of increased complexity to maintain and collaborate across silo’ed tools and processes. Unchecked repository proliferation can easily introduce hidden opportunity costs and productivity decreases which a unified ALM solution such as StarTeam can overcome.

Release management

StarTeam provides consistent visibility into all artifacts of a release and are able to timewarp to get (and manipulate) that picture - applies to both Macro (full Release) and Micro (scoped from a specific process item and its traceability)

Management & team visibility

StarTeam increase management and team Visibility by providing consolidated snapshot that integrates all assets (file or process) of a project. This provides teams with direct access and visibility to project progress and all its artefacts (including change management artefacts) on any state at any point in time.

Process flexibility

Flexibility to adapt to any process at any time through customizing the server components needed to support your best practice. Teams can define, store, manage, version and snapshot ANY process artefacts that they may require to develop their projects. Further increase usability by providing custom layouts so users with different technical profiles are able to easily access and interact with process artefacts through the web.

Reduced admin overhead & skill development

Reduce Cost of Administration (skill development across different tools, time managing different tools) by providing a centralized user management and access control solution across version control and process artefacts (bugs, tasks, requirements, custom)

Integrate

The StarTeam repository often serves as the ‘single source of truth’ for all development related activities and assets. The following are some of the key integrations that make this possible.

Subversion file federation for StarTeam

subversion

By federating Subversion file content into StarTeam, users can effectively add change tracking and distributed development support to their SVN repositories. Interoperability and a unified view across your combined file and change management assets provide clarity and control for your environment. Open source co-existence and distributed team collaboration with SVN has never been this easy or powerful.

StarTeam connector for Tasktop

tasktop

The StarTeam Connector for Tasktop provides Eclipse, Visual Studio and external ALM system integration for StarTeam. Development teams get advanced traceability, visibility and reporting through task driven IDE work. They stay focused on developing software as all requirements, bugs, tasks, and relevant source files are brought directly to them and managed within their IDE. When used in conjunction with Tasktop Sync, organizations gain cross-tool interoperability for over 40 ALM tools.

Eclipse IDE integration

Eclipse

Expose all StarTeam artefacts – including source code, defects and tasks, as well as any customizations and enforced processes – to the Eclipse developer. Eclipse IDE integration also enforces process item traceability to source code from within the Team Synchronizer view, increasing management visibility into development activity.

Microsoft Visual Studio integration

Visual Studio

StarTeam integration with Visual Studio exposes the StarTeam software configuration management capabilities within the Visual Studio development environment. It enables developers to develop applications in the Visual Studio environment while using the version control, change request, topic, task, and requirement component assets hosted within StarTeam.

StarTeam Agile

Managing Agile teams with StarTeam has never been so easy... or so rewarding.

Agile development has become mainstream, but finding ways to integrate Agile practices alongside more traditional approaches can prove frustrating, as developer freedom conflicts with management insight.

StarTeam users already realize the value of having a robust change management platform supporting their software delivery practices, giving much-needed visibility throughout the lifecycle.

With StarTeam’s new Agile support, StarTeam users will find it easier than ever before to:

  • Organize, prioritize and manage their Agile teams’ product backlogs
  • Plan their sprints, task out the work and then track progress through the sprint
  • Get comprehensive visibility of all their Agile assets

Now available in Beta for StarTeam users, our new agile product brings highly intuitive planning and tracking for all user stories, tasks, teams, sprints and more, in an easy-to-use interface that’s fully integrated with your existing StarTeam platform.

Seamless and automated traceability from your agile tasks to your source code

Agile tasks appear automatically in the developer’s IDE task list, generating traceability information the moment they are activated, enabling complete visibility into how tasks got executed, and their impact on other assets in your delivery lifecycle.

Running agile processes for existing projects, releases and teams

Automatic integration with your existing StarTeam server enables you to see all your existing projects, releases and teams from within the agile environment, removing the need for any manual intervention in keeping agile activities up to date.

Snapshot the state of your agile assets, as you currently do for code

StarTeam users understand that version control is not just about source code. Keeping on top of all delivery assets means knowing things like which version of a requirement links to any given version of source code, and in which release or build a user story was completed; only then can customers upgrade with confidence.

Aside from these benefits, which allow you to the make the most of your existing StarTeam processes and artefacts, your Agile teams will be able to carry out their work in a more effective and rewarding environment.

StarTeam and open source co-existence

Open source tools are widely used to support ALM processes for a number of reasons. While there is a perception of low cost, organizations face potential new problems of disconnected tools, broken processes and out of sync teams.

This is where StarTeam helps by enabling organizations to choose to either streamline a hybrid tool environment through tool co-existence capabilities, or transition to a simplified and consolidated repository. The central Change Management hub provides cross-tool and process visibility. StarTeam de-risks repository proliferation while supporting ALM interoperability and co-existence with open source ALM tools.

Subversion Federation & ALM interoperability

subversionInteroperability with Subversion has become an important goal for Borland as part of our open Source co-existence strategy. With the Borland Connector for Tasktop, StarTeam opens up a world of ALM tool interoperability possibilities, making it possible to unify ALM processes like never before. With StarTeam, users are able to federate SVN repository content within StarTeam, enabling these files to co-exist alongside other existing StarTeam assets (both file and change management assets). This will effectively add a change management layer on top of existing SVN deployments, as well as adding significant support for geographically distributed team collaboration.
