About StarTeam

Why a change and configuration management tool is important

Translating market requirements and customer requests into viable products is easily accomplished with effective change and configuration management. As the cornerstone of product development, it ensures that change is managed, implemented, analyzed and released properly throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) .

Modern enterprises spend significant amounts of time, IT effort and financial resources trying to achieve clarity within a constantly-changing SDLC, in order to accelerate the process between customer request and solution delivery. But the disconnected nature of their data and teams means they still rely on manual processes and costly integrations that prevent them from achieving an efficient, reliable and repeatable software supply chain.

How can Star Team help?

StarTeam provides a single source of change management for teams, tools and processes – regardless of whether your teams are co-located or geographically distributed. StarTeam can be integrated into the current environment and immediately deliver a connected view of the SDLC assets from other tools. This enables a full range of capabilities across all integrated assets.

  • Stakeholders leverage StarTeam’s complete versioning, baselining and reporting of all their assets to gain visibility over the changes that define each deliverable.
  • Developers access a consolidated activity view so that they can collaborate, review and deliver their changes to the customer quickly.
  • The whole team can achieve the necessary visibility and connectivity of their entire software lifecycle to confidently deliver what the customer wants - every time.

Star Team offers much more than other Change Management solutions:

  • Borland Connect: Full data synchronization between all repositories and clients. Deploy across historic in-house solutions and integrate all assets. Use the current connectors or create your own to take advantage of StarTeam capabilities including versioning, branching, tracing, labeling and reporting.
  • StarTeam Agile: A fully integrated, web-based system for agile developers. It connects the agile development process with source code, defects and other StarTeam features.
  • Geographically distributed development: Superior architecture for geographically distributed teams. Supports enterprise-scale development, including hundreds of development projects for potentially thousands of users. Customers benefit from the central control and visibility of a single repository. An advanced caching feature, MPX Cache Agent, accelerates the average check-out time of documents by 50%.
  • Customer workflows: Flexibility to adapt to any process, at any time, by customizing the server components, layouts and workflows needed to support indigenous best practice. Teams can define, store, manage, version and snapshot any process artefacts to drive optimum efficiency throughout the application lifecycle.
  • TeamInspector: A systematic approach to assessing if new software updates are ready for release. Metrics determine if the code is solid, maintainable, has been adequately tested and is built to standard.
  • Requirements management center: Develop your requirements in StarTeam to drive the source code design and enjoy full traceability across projects. StarTeam integrates with all other IDEs so users get the same control throughout.
  • DataMart:Review, correlate, and compare cross-project data metrics to heighten project visibility and improve fact-based decision support. Create a unique reporting data environment where users create dashboards, gather business intelligence and benefit from cross-project reporting.
  • Support for HP Quality Center: Synchronize defects and test plans with your development team.

Compare

StarTeam is offered in two editions in order to best fit your organization’s needs. Both editions are capable of scaling from the very smallest projects all the way to some of the world’s largest source code repository deployments. The most significant addition found in the Enterprise Advantage Edition over the Enterprise Edition, is the inclusion of advanced remote caching technology to support highly distributed teams in potentially huge enterprise deployments.

StarTeam versus open source based solutions

While cost is definitely a major contributing factor to the increased use of open source tools in recent years, organizations are coming to realize that there are more factors at work as adoption increase. Some key considerations are highlighted below:

Interoperability & open source co-existence

With the Borland Connector for Tasktop, StarTeam opens up a world of ALM tool interoperability possibilities, making it possible to unify ALM processes like never before. With over 40 ALM vendors supporting the Tasktop framework, streamlining your ALM environment is de-risked significantly. StarTeam supports the co-existence of both agile and waterfall based projects, content and process automation within the same shared repository.

SubVersion Federation

Using the Borland Tasktop Connector with StarTeam, users will be able to federate SVN file repository content within StarTeam, allowing these files to co-exist alongside other existing StarTeam assets (including both file and change management assets). This adds the power of StarTeam's comprehensive change management capabilities to any number of SVN repositories and provides enterprise wide visibility and control for a mixed StarTeam/SVN environment.

Repository proliferation and ALM tool landscape complexity

With more disconnected open source repositories being deployed over time, organizations are facing a growing problem of increased complexity to maintain and collaborate across silo’ed tools and processes. Unchecked repository proliferation can easily introduce hidden opportunity costs and productivity decreases which a unified ALM solution such as StarTeam can overcome.

Release management

StarTeam provides consistent visibility into all artifacts of a release and are able to timewarp to get (and manipulate) that picture - applies to both Macro (full Release) and Micro (scoped from a specific process item and its traceability)

Management & team visibility

StarTeam increase management and team Visibility by providing consolidated snapshot that integrates all assets (file or process) of a project. This provides teams with direct access and visibility to project progress and all its artefacts (including change management artefacts) on any state at any point in time.

Process flexibility

Flexibility to adapt to any process at any time through customizing the server components needed to support your best practice. Teams can define, store, manage, version and snapshot ANY process artefacts that they may require to develop their projects. Further increase usability by providing custom layouts so users with different technical profiles are able to easily access and interact with process artefacts through the web.

Reduced admin overhead & skill development

Reduce Cost of Administration (skill development across different tools, time managing different tools) by providing a centralized user management and access control solution across version control and process artefacts (bugs, tasks, requirements, custom)

Integrate

StarTeam integration

Organizations often work with multiple vendors and tools. Get full control of your ALM process by using the integration capabilities of Star Team. View and manage multiple tools with a single solution.

Borland Connect

Link it all together

The SDLC process is highly complex, with many factors to delicately coordinate. This makes maintaining visibility and traceability across multiple repositories and regions and across geographically distributed teams almost impossible. So how do you resolve it for your customers with the use of a single tool?

Borland Connect is the answer

This tool enables item and relationship data synchronization between the StarTeam Server and other repositories or clients. Change management capabilities of StarTeam are available in the data, once it is synchronized into the StarTeam Server. These include versioning, branching, tracing, labeling and reporting.

Acquiring consistent reporting and baselines across ALL of your software delivery assets has never been easier. Add StarTeam to your existing environment and use Borland Connect to integrate all of your teams, tools and assets for a consolidated view of the entire software delivery lifecycle.

New connectors are constantly being developed and published to the Borland Community.  If a connector doesn’t yet exist for one of your tools, then the Borland Connect API can be used to create that connector quickly. Once plugged-in, each connector can be customized using a mapping file so that your exact environment of public and private tools is fully supported.

Make the connection

Add Borland Connect to create a suitable integrated SDLC environment. Any SDLC practitioner can now directly participate and contribute to the developer’s view of the world. Borland Connect introduces a single source of truth for StarTeam users over the disparate release environment.

StarTeam and open source co-existence

Open source tools are widely used to support ALM processes for a number of reasons. While there is a perception of low cost, organizations face potential new problems of disconnected tools, broken processes and out of sync teams.

This is where StarTeam helps by enabling organizations to choose to either streamline a hybrid tool environment through tool co-existence capabilities, or transition to a simplified and consolidated repository. The central Change Management hub provides cross-tool and process visibility. StarTeam de-risks repository proliferation while supporting ALM interoperability and co-existence with open source ALM tools.
