Independent Research Firm Ranks Borland® StarTeam® as the Market-Leading Solution for Geographically Distributed Development

Borland StarTeam recognized as a "Strong Performer" by Independent Research Firm

CUPERTINO, Calif. - Dec 07, 2005 : Borland Software Corporation (NASDAQ NM: BORL) announced today that leading industry analyst firm, Forrester Research, has named Borland's software change and configuration management solution a "Strong Performer" in the December 2005 Forrester Wave: Process-Centric Software Configuration Management, Q4 2005 report. The report describes Borland® StarTeam® as the market-leading solution for geographically distributed development.

Process-centric SCM is a category of development solutions that provide a centralized platform for storing, tracking and managing project assets across the application development lifecycle. According to Forrester's definition, process-centric SCM solutions automate software development management processes, providing "the cornerstone of life-cycle management."1 Process-centric SCM solutions enable organizations to drive increased team efficiency through greater project predictability and control.

"Borland has been shifting its focus in the past few years from developer productivity tools to team productivity solutions for the entire software development lifecycle, including StarTeam, its process-centric SCM solution," writes Carey Shwaber, Forrester Research analyst and author of the report. "StarTeam's most notable strength is its market-leading solution for geographically distributed development. StarTeam is an appropriate choice for corporate IT shops no matter how formal or lightweight their development processes."1

Process-centric SCM solutions are particularly valuable in distributed development situations, where software development teams are dispersed across different locations. Distributed development can significantly amplify the complexity and cost of software development, exacerbating communication challenges, increasing rework and reducing time-to-market for software projects. StarTeam is designed to address the specific needs of distributed teams, providing a scalable multi-user environment that supports effective communication and collaboration across geographic and organizational boundaries. StarTeam's central repository can be securely accessed from multiple locations, and serves as the infrastructure to define workflow processes to increase control and visibility over distributed development projects.

"We believe that distributed development is the single biggest challenge and opportunity software organizations will face over the next two years," said Marc Brown, senior director of product marketing at Borland. "Forrester's coverage of process-centric SCM solutions underscores the important role that change and configuration management solutions play in an effective application lifecycle management strategy. Being named as a Strong Performer in the report, and the market-leading offering for geographically distributed development, demonstrates the traction Borland has had helping customers overcome the challenges involved in distributed development."

Forrester's vendor assessment process evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of the industry's top process-centric SCM solutions, evaluating seven vendors for product strength, strategy and market presence.
