Borland Consulting Services Helps DTCC Achieve CMMI® Level 3 Certification in 10 Process Areas
Primary infrastructure organization supporting all equity markets in the U.S. teams with Borland for process optimization services to improve consistency
CUPERTINO, Calif. - Jan 30, 2006 : Borland Software Corporation, the global leader for Software Delivery Optimization, today announced that a consulting engagement between Borland and The Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation's (DTCC) Applications Development and Maintenance group has resulted in DTCC passing a formal assessment to achieve a Capability Maturity Model® Integration (CMMI®) Capability Level 3 rating. This rating was awarded in 10 process areas within four categories of the CMMI discipline.
Developed by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, CMMI is an internationally recognized method for evaluating and measuring the maturity of an organization's software development processes. A CMMI Level 3 rating from Carnegie Mellon University's Software Engineering Institute (SEI) means that DTCC's Application Development and Maintenance group has established effective, well-defined processes and procedures in project management and software development that meet CMMI requirements. A team of independent evaluators from Borland Consulting Services, certified by the SEI, performed the assessment in conjunction with DTCC personnel.
DTCC, through its subsidiaries, provides the primary custody clearance and settlement infrastructure for virtually all trading in the United States markets in equities, corporate and municipal bonds, U.S. government securities, mortgage-backed securities and money market instruments. It also provides information services for over the counter derivatives globally, global corporate actions, and mutual funds and insurance in the U.S. In 2004, it cleared and settled transactions worth more than $1 quadrillion. The Application Development and Maintenance (ADM) group with DTCC is responsible for developing, managing, and testing all software used by DTCC and its subsidiaries for all services.
Prior to adopting CMMI, ADM had a variety of disparate methodologies in place, which meant that individuals were performing tasks in a variety of different and inconsistent ways, depending on how much process documentation there was to support the underlying work. "Since we began our process improvement efforts, we have been able to infuse consistency in our development tasks, our project management discipline and across our entire development organization," said Carmine Pernice, DTCC IT Director and CMMI Program Manager.
Throughout 2005, experts from Borland worked closely with DTCC senior management to deliver customized process improvement consulting and training services, as well as appraisal services. In addition, Borland process consultants served as members of the DTCC Engineering Process Group (EPG) to ensure success with the company's CMMI-related corporate goals.
"As trusted advisors and EPG members, Borland consultants were part of a team that shared a common drive for achieving success," according to Pernice. "Borland and DTCC operated seamlessly as a partnership at the management and individual contributor levels, working together to meet our CMMI Program objectives and stretch goals."
In the engineering category, for example, DTCC sought Level 3 capability in requirements development to strengthen the bond between ADM and product management. DTCC engaged Borland Consulting Services to deliver customized training through a cadre of requirements workshops that included members of both project and product management. The Borland Consulting Services team worked closely with DTCC's existing, robust Education Center to customize and deliver training.
"Standardized processes put everyone on the same page, improving visibility and consistency throughout the development lifecycle," said Mike Epner, Vice President of Global Solutions at Borland. "Our team is dedicated to helping organizations like DTCC be successful by providing unbiased assessments, interpreting results, and applying those results in practical ways that allow them to achieve corporate goals in the allotted timeframe with tailored solutions."
