Search tips
Choosing search termsIt is obvious, but worth emphasizing: The more specific and relevant your search terms are, the more likely it is you'll get the results you're looking for.
- Always try the obvious first. If you are looking for information relating to a Borland product and you know the product name, include that in your search.
- Use words that are likely to appear on a web page
- Be as specific as possible.
By default, the search will only returns pages that include all of your search terms. There is no need to include "and" between terms. Keep in mind that the order in which the terms are typed will affect the search results. To restrict a search further, include more terms, putting the most important ones first.
Automatic exclusion of common wordsThe search will ignore common words and characters such as "where", "of" and "how", as well as certain single digits and single letters, because they tend to slow down your search without improving the results. You will see an indication if a common word has been excluded by displaying details on the results page below the search box. If a common word is essential to getting the results you want, you can include it by putting a "+" sign in front of it. (Be sure to include a space before the "+" sign.) Another method for doing this is conducting a phrase search, which means putting quotation marks around two or more words. Common words in a phrase search (e.g., "where are you") are included in the search.
CapitalizationSearches are NOT case sensitive. All letters, regardless of how you type them, will be understood as lower case. For example, searches for "JBUILDER", "Jbuilder", and "JBuilDer" will all return the same results.
Variations of search termsTo provide the most accurate results, the search does not use "stemming" or support "wildcard" searches. In other words, the search is for exactly the words that you enter in the search box. Searching for "develop" or "develop*" will not yield "developer" or "development". If in doubt, try entering all forms of the word you are looking for in seperate searches, or use the 'with any of the words' option from the advanced search page.
Advanced search optionsThe advanced search options page lets you be more specific about what it is your are searching for. You reach the advanced search page from a link on the standard search page.
You can request pages that match a more complex set of criteria in terms of words to search for. The standard search always looks for documents containing all of the search terms. Through the advanced search you can specify that you want documents returned that contain any of the search terms. In addition you can exclude documents that contain a certain word from the search results.
Among the other advanced search options are: Restricting the search to documents from a particular Borland site, to documents with a specific word in the title rather than in the body of the page, to documents in a certain language (although that is not 100% accurate). You can also specify how many results to show on each result page.
Generally speaking you will likely not require the advanced search options, but they are there if you need them
